The History of Henry's...

The building known as the Sir Henry Gurnett was known for centuries as Kenningtons. It was built between 1275 and 1310 as a timber framed two storey dwelling with aisled hall. Later this aisle was removed and a south hall added. Chimneys were built in the 17th Century and further alterations undertaken in the 19th. Other changes were necessary when Kenningtons became a public house. Much of the original timber has been retained including the beam and brace forming a striking internal feature. The remains of the original moat is now a pleasant pond for ducks.

THE MANOR

At the time of Norman Conquest Kelintuna as it was then called, was held by 3 freeman but 20 years later, the Domesday Book records that Wm de Warerme was the owner. In the 14th century the Manorwars held by socage – i.e. by rent or service – of Prittlewell priory, an establishment supported by tithes and rents from the earl’s demesnes. About the year 1300 we find that Sir Henry Gurnett acquired the manor, adding it to his Wennington estates. He died in 1345. After several changes of ownership it was acquired in 1620 by Sir Thomas Barrett–Lenard family until 1937 at which time it was purchased by Essex county council. In 1979 the Davis family, builders bought the house and when Jim Watt moved out the family converted to a public house. The present owner is Mr Chi Johnson who purchased the premises 2004.
